About Black August

Black August is an annual observance rooted in the organizing of incarcerated Black freedom fighters in California prisons during the 1970s. It is a month of remembrance, reflection, political education, discipline, and action that honors political prisoners and fallen revolutionaries, including George Jackson, Jonathan Jackson, Khatari Gaulden, and the San Quentin Six.

Shaped by the teachings of leaders such as Malcolm X, Black August calls on Black communities to study, fast, train, organize, and fight for liberation. It connects resistance to mass incarceration and state violence with the broader struggle for Black self-determination, community control, human rights, and freedom. Black August is both a tribute to those who resisted oppression and a challenge to strengthen our collective power today.
