This September, Black Lives Matter Grassroots Long Beach invites women to join us at the Bluff for Divine Melanin Energy with Professor Zahalea, a Black-centered wellness and self-defense experience presented as part of our DIVINE WOMAN Wellness Series.
The DIVINE WOMAN series grew out of our 2026 Black Women Are Divine celebration, in honor of the life of Breonna Taylor, and our belief that caring for Black women is a must. The series creates ongoing opportunities for Black women to reconnect with themselves and one another while experiencing practical approaches to wellness led by local Black women healers and wellness practitioners.
For September, we're tapping into the warrior within.
Professor Zahalea Anderson is a renowned Long Beach martial artist, teacher, community mentor, and founder of RA Life Defense. A second-generation practitioner of Sanuces Ryu Ju-Jitsu, her lineage runs through her father and instructor, Grand Master Urban Muhammad, and the late Dr. Moses Powell. Her approach connects practical self-defense with self-love, awareness, discipline, confidence, and alignment of mind, body, and spirit.
During this two-hour outdoor experience, Professor Zahalea will guide women through movement, awareness, practical self-defense, and techniques for strengthening our connection to our bodies and instincts. Wellness is also about feeling grounded in your body, trusting yourself, knowing how to protect yourself, and moving through the world with confidence.
No martial arts experience is necessary. Come as you are, wear comfortable clothing, bring water, and be ready to move.
Your body holds wisdom. Your strength belongs to you. The warrior is already within.
