Black Women Are Divine: A Celebration of Joy, Remembrance, and Sisterhood
Every year during Women’s History Month, we gather across the country for Black Women Are Divine, a national celebration led by Black Lives Matter Grassroots. The gathering is both a celebration and a remembrance. It honors the brilliance, resilience, creativity, and leadership of Black women while also remembering the life of Breonna Taylor.
In Long Beach, our community comes together to mark this moment with intention. We pause to recognize that Black women have always been the heartbeat of movements, families, and communities. We are organizers, artists, caregivers, leaders, innovators, mothers, daughters, teachers, healers, and visionaries. The impact of Black women’s work often holds entire communities together, even when it goes unseen.
Black Women Are Divine creates space to acknowledge that truth out loud.
The event also invites us to reflect on the significance of Breonna Taylor’s life. Her name became known across the world after she was killed in her own home in 2020. For many, her story sparked a deeper conversation about the safety, dignity, and humanity of Black women. Remembering Breonna is not only about grief. It is about commitment. It is about affirming that Black women’s lives matter, and that our communities will continue to uplift and protect one another.
At its heart, this gathering is about joy.
Too often, the stories about Black communities focus only on struggle. While struggle is part of our history, it is not the whole story. Black Women Are Divine intentionally centers celebration. It creates space for laughter, connection, music, art, and the simple act of being together. Joy itself becomes a form of healing and resistance.
This year, our Long Beach gathering will take place at BLU Arts & Wellness, a creative and welcoming space where community and culture come together. Guests will enjoy music, performances, art, food, and meaningful conversation. It is an afternoon designed for Black women to exhale, connect, and celebrate one another.
Participants are encouraged to wear purple, a color that symbolizes dignity, justice, remembrance, and the powerful spirit of Black women. Throughout the event, we will also host a Sister Swap Table, where attendees can share small items like books, candles, jewelry, or affirmations as a gesture of care and connection with another woman in the room.
We also invite you to bring items to donate to the Long Beach Black Infant Health Program, which is facing funding cuts. The program provides care and support to Black pregnant and postpartum mothers in our community. Helpful items include newborn diapers, baby wipes, onesies, baby blankets, bottles, nursing pads, postpartum care supplies, and self-care items for new moms. Gift cards to grocery stores and pharmaciesare also greatly appreciated. Your contribution helps uplift and care for Black mothers and babies in Long Beach.
Moments like these matter.
When Black women gather in spaces that center our joy, our stories, and our power, something powerful happens. New friendships form. Wisdom is shared between generations. Inspiration moves from one person to another. Community becomes stronger.
Black Women Are Divine reminds us that celebration is not separate from movement building. It is part of it. Honoring one another strengthens the relationships that make change possible.
If you have been looking for a space to connect, to celebrate, or simply to be surrounded by community, we invite you to join us.
Come as you are. Bring your light. Bring a friend if you’d like, or come on your own and meet new sisters.
Together, we will celebrate the beauty, strength, and divine spirit of Black women.
